Course Description

This course is the continuation of Mandarin Chinese 1-2. It provides continued development and practice in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Language structures and vocabulary learned in the first year are reviewed, expanded, and refined. New communicative topics are introduced, along with grammar concepts, degree of complement, and sequence-of-action words. Listening comprehension and speaking are enhanced through consistent daily use of Chinese in the classroom.

Cultural topics focus on clothing and shopping, travel and leisure, the Chinese zodiac, and holidays and festivals. Students increase their language proficiency and cultural awareness by viewing video and film clips, listening to audio clips, and reading short stories in Chinese during the second quarter. Classroom instruction and interactions are in Chinese as much as possible. Assessments include quizzes, oral evaluations, monthly tests, and projects assigned throughout the year. Students should expect to spend 30 - 40 minutes a day on homework assignments and review.

Course Standards

This course is aligned with the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning. Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons and Communities (five Cs) in the Standards are the common practice in the teaching and learning Mandarin Chinese.

Textbook and Materials

The Discovering Chinese iPad application operates as a combined textbook and workbook, complete with stimulating visuals, audio recordings, interactive tools, and practice exercises. Each Volume includes 12 lessons, with each lesson containing ample opportunity to practice and apply the content it has covered.

Course objectives/learning outcomes

This course will enable students continue to:

• Learn thematic vocabulary and the grammatical fundamentals of the language;
• Use the thematic vocabulary in their appropriate contexts;
• Learn to read and write Chinese in meaningful paragraphs/passages;
• Build more basic Mandarin language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing;
• Learn cultural topics through everyday routines, family, cuisine, school, and celebrations;
• Increase their language proficiency and cultural awareness by viewing videos, films, and audio clips.

Course organization

First Semester will be covering Discovering Chinese Volume 2 Lesson 14- 21, including 12 weekly quizzes, 4 monthly tests and 2 quarterly projects. Second Semester will be covering Discovering Chinese Volume 2 Lesson 22-24, Volume 3 Lesson 25-27, including weekly quizzes, monthly tests, quarterly projects and semester/final exams.

Course policies:

Regular attendance and being on time to class are expected for all classes. Absence from school is the greatest single cause of poor achievement in school.  Successful students are seldom absent or tardy.  The High School Attendance Program will be followed as outlined in your student handbook.

Class participation
Students are expected to participate in class by taking lecture notes, engaging in class discussions, and taking part in all reading, writing, listening and speaking activities.

Missed tests/ Exams or major assignments

You can expect to complete daily homework assignments from your iPad or worksheets provided by the teacher.  Homework must be completed by the start of class the day it is due.  Use your textbook as a reference guide if you do not understand the homework. Late work is accepted through the end of the current quarter. Grades may be lowered based on the quality of work.  This is the policy for all world languages classes.

All assessment activities such as presentations, tests, and projects are designed to show the progress made by students.  It is essential that you be present on summative assessment days in order to keep up with the pace of the course.  Quizzes are assigned throughout the chapter and serve as a benchmark for vocabulary or grammar in the chapter.  These serve as a benchmark for students before larger assessments are given.  Large tests occur approximately every month.  Retakes on summative assessments are permitted through the end of the current quarter. Each retake must be done within 5 days after the students get the feedback.

Electronic devices


Electronic Devices:  Electronic devices are defined as cell phones, I-pods or other MP3 player, and gaming platforms (DS/DSI, PSP/PSP go, game boys).  Students are responsible for the safe keep of their electronic devices.  Students are allowed to use electronic devices in the green zone before and after school and anytime during periods 1-8.  The green zone is Cafeterias A, B, & C.  The green zone is marked with green tape.   The rest of the building is a red zone. Students who use their electronic device in the red zone will have their device taken away and cannot get it back until a PM is served.   You may not use your cell phone or mp3 player at anytime in the classroom.  Any use will result in confiscation and property will be returned after detention is served.  SHS is not responsible for lost or stolen electronic devices.

Academic dishonesty

Academic dishonesty:  Academic Dishonesty refers to cheating, copying, plagiarizing, or otherwise representing the work of others as one’s own through verbal, written, graphic,
electronic, or other means. Students determined to have been academically dishonest are subject to disciplinary action. Consequences will depend on the severity of the offense, the number of offenses, the impact on other students and teachers, and/or the curriculum. Academic dishonesty undermines the learning process and will not be condoned.

Grading policy

Students will be asked to show evidence of learning through homework, projects, writing assignments, quizzes, and tests.  In some instances, students will be asked to re-do work and resubmit it.  All graded work will be marked in the following fashion:

4 = MASTERY (A): Tasks or the target of instruction allow students to apply their knowledge and skills to new or related situations or scenarios. A mark of 4 indicates not only
evidence of application and analysis but also includes synthesis and evaluation.

3 = PROFICIENT (B): Tasks or the target of instruction consist of complex knowledge, skills,
application, and analysis.

2 = BASIC (C): Tasks are basic recall and simple skills which include knowledge and

1 = BELOW BASIC (D): There is some evidence of emerging simple skills, gaps in knowledge and unreliable comprehension skills.

0 = NO EVIDENCE (E): There is no evidence of learning including missing work and incomplete work.

Students will be graded on MARKS in this course.

Infinite Campus Plus calculates grades according to the following grading scale

4.00-3.2 = A
3.19-2.4 = B
2.39-1.6 = C
1.59-.8 = D
.79 and below = E

Coursework (20%) + Assessment (80%) + Final Exam (10%) = Semester 1/ Semester 2 Grade

*Coursework is any assignment given as practice before a quiz, test, presentation or culminating project.  Examples would be worksheets, practice writing, listening and reading comprehension check, in class activities, etc.

*Summative Assessment is work given as quizzes, tests, presentations or written assignments in the target language, or culminating project.

Materials Required

• A three-ring binder with 5 dividers labeled as Writing Sheet/Packet, Handouts, Projects,
          Tests/Quizzes, Syllabus/My Goal
• a note book
• a couple of pencils and pens
• 2 dry erase markers to start with and an old sock or washcloth along with a ziplock bag.

Classroom Behavior/Expectations

• Come to class on time and prepared;
• Do not talk or interrupt during instruction.
• Respect others;
• Students are to be in their seats and ready to begin when the bell rings.
• Remain seated till the teacher dismisses you at the end of the class.
• No food, drinks or gum are allowed in the classroom at any time.
